Basic Baby Hat Pattern

Baby hats are a fun, easy, very portable project. Click on the baby to find a great charity to send your baby hats to!

Basic Baby Hat

Size 8,9, or 10 double point and/or size 8 (8 1/4 or 12) circular needles, to get gauge.I use size 8 because I am a loose knitter.
worsted weight yarn in baby colors
gauge 4 stitches to 1. 5 rows to 1

Cast on 45 stitches

Row1-5: knit all rows
Row 6: Purl row
Row 7 & 8 : knit
Row 9: Purl
Row 10: Knit
Repeat Row 10 until hat is 4 inches
Place marker at beginning of row
Decrease Rows:
Row 1: *K3,K2tog* repeat around
Row 2 & 3: Knit
Row 4: *K2, K2tog* repeat around
Row 5 & 6: Knit
Row 7: *K1. K2tog*, repeat around
Row 8 & 9: Knit
Row 10 & 11: K 2tog
Leaving a 10 piece of yarn, cut off and run yarn through remaining 4 stitches. Pull to the inside and weave in all tails.

Variations:
Eyelet hat:
Rows 1-5 : the same
Row 6: Increase one in first stitch
Row 7: K2tog around row
Row 8: *YO, P1* , repeat
Row 9: K2tog, K rest of row
Row 10 to finish same as above hat. When the hat is finished you can run a crochet ribbon made of contrasting yarn through the eyelets if desires.
